Healthcare: Palliative Care Certificate Program

This certificate course will prepare you to provide high-quality, evidence-based palliative care to individuals across the adult lifespan and in all settings, as part of an interdisciplinary team. These workshops are especially valuable to registered nurses (RNs), advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) and others seeking the knowledge and skills to provide medical care and emotional support that manages symptoms, relieves pain and discomfort, and improves quality of life for patients with life-threatening or terminal illnesses. Learner Outcome: Upon completion of this certificate program, the participant will be able to describe, analyze and apply principles of palliative care as part of an interdisciplinary team. Adelphi University College of Nursing and Public & Health is approved as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the Northeast Multistate Division Education Unit, an accredited approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Each course is approved for 6 contact hours. The presenters and planners have disclosed no conflict of interest. This program has received no commercial support. To receive contact hours, the learner must attend the entire program and complete program evaluation form. Partial credit will not be given. A total of six workshops were completed. Two specialty workshops, in addition to at least four of the five workshops below are necessary for the certificate. Core Workshops: Introduction to Palliative Care Chronic Disease and Palliative Care I Chronic Disease and Palliative Care II Communication Skills for Palliative Care Caring for the Patient Nearing End of Life Specialty Workshops: Pain Assessment and Management of Adult Across the Lifespan (for APRNs) Symptom Assessment and Management of Adult Across the Lifespan (for APRNs)

  • Overview of Palliative Care. History and philosophy of palliative care. Various models and core concepts. The role of the nurse as a member of interdisciplinary palliative care team.
  • Knowledge and skills in providing palliative care to patients with chronic and serious illnesses. Understanding common trajectories of serious illnesses such as cardiac, pulmonary,COVID-19, neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases. Spiritual, psychological, social, legal and ethical aspects of care.
  • Knowledge and skills in providing palliative care to patients with chronic and serious illnesses. Understanding common trajectories of serious illnesses including gastrointestinal, renal, liver diseases, cancer and frailty. Spiritual, psychological, social, legal and ethical aspects of care.
  • Skills needed to navigate difficult conversations with patients and their families. Communication strategies for shared and informed decision making with patients and families.Communication strategies for effective communication with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Essential palliative care skills for advanced practice registered nurses (APRN) to assess and manage pain in adults with serious illnesses. Pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions for pain management. Applications of evidence-based principles in prescribing medications, ordering diagnostic tests and recommending treatments.
  • Essential palliative care skills for advanced practice registered nurses (APRN) to assess and manage complex symptoms in a coordinated and comprehensive manner in adults with serious illnesses. Pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions for management of symptoms such as fatigue and nausea. Applications of evidence-based principles in prescribing medications, ordering diagnostic tests and recommending treatments.
